Success for Leeds RC at Durham Regatta

Leeds Rowing Club seniors continued their winning streak at Durham Regatta on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 June.

We took many of our club men’s, women’s and junior crews up to Durham for the two day regatta. One of the largest in the North of England, this regatta was packed with entries on both days and the blustery conditions made for some interesting racing!

It was a great opportunity for our club men to focus on regatta season and get out their eight and quad. A relatively new set-up, while not coming away with the wins have set themselves on the right pathway for success later in the season.

Our women had some solid win’s in some of their rounds, with our coxed quad soundly beating their Sunderland opposition, only to lose to Edinburgh Uni in the final, the eight beating Durham Uni Boat Club in the first round to lose to the eventual winners, Yarm School in the Semi-Final and our coxless quad losing to an experienced Durham Amateur RC crew in the Quarter-Finals.

The juniors had mixed fortunes at the regatta with our J14 girls coxed quad experiencing steering issues meaning that while they won their race, they crossed into the opposition line causing a disqualification, our J15 boys double scull came back from being down against Durham School to be neck and neck all the way until the finish line losing by about a foot. Our J15 boys coxed quad and J15 girls double scull came up against some tough Northern region opposition who were too strong on the day. While not the results our juniors wanted, there was huge enthusiasm for getting it right next time!

Finally though our wins came through on late Sunday with our women’s coxed four solidly beating all of their opposition and taking away a convincing win in their event and Dan Jones yet again proved too strong for his opposition and won the Championship Single Sculls event by three lengths.

Well done to everyone who raced this weekend and thanks to Sam W for towing.
